Peale was born in Bowersville, Ohio, USA, on May 31 1898. He grew up knowing the value of hard work helping support his family by delivering newspapers, working in a grocery store, and selling pots and pans from door to door.

Having had a University education in both Ohio and Boston he went on to become a reporter on the Findlay, Ohio, Morning Republic.

Ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1922, he served as pastor at many different churches that included Berkeley, Rhode Island, Brooklyn, New York, and Syracuse, New York.

He then changed his affiliation to the Dutch Reformed Church where he gained a name for himself with his sermons on a positive approach to modern living.

These sermons were regularly broadcast, on radio at first then later on television. The church had 600 members when he first arrived as pastor, by the time he retired in 1984 it had over 5,000 members.

Positive thinking is just another term for faith." He also wrote, "Your unconscious mind ... [has a] power that turns wishes into realities when the wishes are strong enough."

Along with his wife Ruth, Peale started the religious magazine Guideposts in 1945; at its high point it reached a circulation of many millions.
